But Can a Chameleon Write?
July 29th, 2009 • Caroline • Leave a Comment »I received a forward this week simply titled “Chameleon”. When I opened the link, I was presented with a video of a chameleon changing its color before my very eyes!
OK I’ll admit, I don’t know if this video is for real, but it still made me think. Rarely do forwards entice me to watch. I am often met with forwards that include, “send this to five people or you are going to die” or pleads to keep my eyes out for a missing child; a child who actually isn’t missing. Forwards rarely interest me unless they provide intriguing information or fun entertainment. So as I was watching this chameleon change its colors with ease and grace, it made me think of writing.
You see, in a sense, good writers have to have the same qualities as chameleons. We have the ability to change our “colors” according to the personalities, requirements and expectations of our clients. We are able to alter our own thinking and writing style to match those of our customers. And, at the same time, we are able to maintain our own values and beliefs. In a way, writers are much like actors – actors of words rather than presence. We are able to escape real life as we delve into the life our words create for us at any given moment.
While some may think possessing the qualities of a chameleon isn’t ‘genuine’, I must disagree. You see, this isn’t the first time I have recognized my chameleon tendencies. My friends tend to come from all steps of life and I love trying out new kinds of food and music. As long as it doesn’t involve heights (no skydiving for me!), I’ll try just about anything once.
My open mind and power to ease into just about any situation is what makes me an excellent candidate to work in the writing profession. I have the ability to conform myself to just about any situation. (And no, this is not an excerpt from my cover letter. I’m only making a point!) I am capable of adjusting to (almost) any personality I encounter. Of course, there are exceptions for everything!
My main point of this blog post is to make readers aware that a good writer should be able to adjust to the personality and requirements of each client. Yes of course most of us have a ‘niche’ however, every job is different and every piece of work should be unique. Just like the changing colors of a chameleon!
